A Shot In the Dark: Graduate Collection by Silvia Barbieri

Silvia Barbieri is an Italian fashion designer based in Mercogliano, the province of Avellino. The designer attended professional tailoring courses and recently graduated from the Fashion Academy of Naples IUAD.

Silvia already had an opportunity to represent her work at different competitions and events. The designer was selected for the Italian Fashion Talent Awards two years in a row, her work was recognised by the McQueen Creators, exhibited at the 'Salotto di Milano' during the Milan Fashion Week 2020 and featured in Vogue Italia.

“Every recognition that is given is the result of sacrifices, work, commitment and a great desire to improve oneself.”

Silvia’s love for fashion began during her high school years. She has always been intrigued by the fashion industry and the power it has.

While working on the new collections, Silvia likes to observe the world from a different perspective. The designer finds it important to design the garments which can facilitate the everyday life of the customers.

“I am inspired by everything that surrounds me, intrigues me in some ways. I am fascinated by scientific fantasy and everything about the dream world.”

Silvia is also influenced by the old Alexander McQueen collections. "McQueen is such a mysterious genius. I would like to collaborate with the creative director, Sarah Burton, to analyze and study his archives."

Silvia likes experimenting with new materials and techniques. She also believes that it is important to criticize the results. “It is crucial to enrich with responses related to the personal experiences. I always try to fit into new contexts so that I never stop just at what I already know.”

Every collection created by Silvia has a different approach. “Sometimes I start with the combinations of fabrics and colours, or from the developments of the lines. Other times it could be based around the theme that I want to address.”

This year Silvia is working on the new project. The designer was inspired by the Marvel film ‘Venom’. Silvia thinks it was a dynamic, scenic and powerful film which was “struck by the science fiction matter that envelopes and covers the protagonist.”

“I connected everything to the fluid iron and the movement of the magnetic bodies. From the combustion of the iron wool I have obtained the iron oxide, which remains stationary on a magnetic base and maintains the shape of the magnet.”

Silvia is starting to look at the fashion world from a different perspective. The designer wants to “ make the world understand the true importance of fashion” and to “abandon all those negative values that the fashion system uses today.”
